There is no tax on transfers to anyone of a weapon that is unserviceable. Making a weapon unserviceable means it is permanently altered so that it cannot work, and is not readily restorable. For example a gun can be made unserviceable by welding the chamber closed, and welding the barrel to the receiver or frame. An unserviceable weapon is sometimes called a DEWAT, for DE-activated WAr Trophy (see below).

 –

A class 1 or 2 SOT may also deal in NFA firearms. A class 3 SOT costs $500 a year, due each July 1. A class 1 or 2 SOT costs $1000 a year, except that SOT’s who did less than $500,000 in gross receipts in business the previous year qualify for a reduced rate of $500 per year, also due July 1. One must also have the appropriate FFL to engage in the specific activity, as well as the SOT. This is because most NFA weapons are also title 1 weapons, and thus both the law regulating title 1 weapons (the GCA) and title 2 weapons (the NFA) must be complied with. As with the privacy of Registry information and transfer information, SOT status is also protected tax information, and ATF will not release lists of SOT holders, as they will of FFL holders.

Such “sears” in the hands of innocent buyers were left on the Registry, with the requirement that they were not to be removed from the host gun, in effect converting them into receiver conversions in the eyes of BATF.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the round vs. rectangular field of view of the Eotech magnifier? Never having looked thru one my first inclination is to match the rectangle to the rectangle of the Eotech. The cost, however, is a huge jump. The other difference is round = 3x and rectangular = 4x but I don’t think that makes much difference to me. Thanks for any input. __________________ G19 G19 G30 AR15 gordo is offline Reply With Quote gordo View Public Profile Find More Posts by gordo Old 08-21-2009, 09:13 #2 edrobert Senior Member edrobert’s Avatar Join Date: Dec 2006 Posts: 1,980 I like the square view…..don’t like the price though! Looked at a clone at the local fun show this past weekend and was quite impressed with the glass. I think I’ll pick one up at the October show cause I can’t see spending $400-700 on a fixed power magnifier. __________________ "Go Hoos!" edrobert is offline Reply With Quote edrobert View Public Profile Find More Posts by edrobert Old 08-21-2009, 09:25 #3 Nytemare Senior Member Nytemare’s Avatar Join Date: Apr 2009 Posts: 606 Man honestly if you can find a good clone for a lot cheaper get it. Thats what I think I’m going to do. If the magnifier goes down, I’m good with the irons at distance so its not that big of a deal. I take that since your putting a EOtech on there your building this for CQB, so the magnifier isn’t going to be used a lot. __________________ Glocks & AR’s:cool: Black Rifle Club Member #2311 I Dream In Sight Picture Semper FI, Til I Die! Have started shooting 2 gun matches and a lot of the stages are close quarters, but the few stages that start out long leave me seeing a blurred target and I need some magnification and the ability to remove the magnifier between stages. My life is certainly not going to depend on any of this gear. If clones do the job and can be removed without a lot of trouble maybe that is the way to go. __________________ G19 G19 G30 AR15 gordo is offline Reply With Quote gordo View Public Profile Find More Posts by gordo Old 08-21-2009, 11:51 #5 Nytemare Senior Member Nytemare’s Avatar Join Date: Apr 2009 Posts: 606 Yea I understand man.
